El Escorial and Segovia

Today was a much different day than we had been having. We left Madrid and made the long bus journey north to Burgos. The trip was broken into three legs.

After our morning walk in the park and breakfast we headed north to our first stop at El Escorial, which is one of many Spanish royal sites and has functioned as a monastery, basilica, royal palace, pantheon, library, museum, university, school and hospital. Learn more on Wikipedia. El Escorial is simply amazing and is by far the largest complex that we will tour. Below are a few photos.

After our tour, we had lunch and headed north to Segovia. Segovia is a super cool town with narrow streets and a spectacular feel and energy. Our walking tour included seeing the ancient Roman aqueduct (2000 years old) and the Alcazar de Segovia. Alcazars are palaces build by the Moors (Muslims from north Africa) which were later taken over by the catholic royalty of Spain. Below are some photos from our tour.

After our tour of Segovia, we had a 2 hour bus ride north to Burgos. We cleaned up, ate dinner and took a stroll in the park along the river in front of our hotel. Tomorrow we tour Burgos in the morning, see the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and head to our home for the next two days, San Sebastian.
