San Sebastian

Today was our “free day” in San Sebastian. The trip has been jam packed with tours and adventures. We all enjoyed having one day with less structure to regroup before our final push to Barcelona tomorrow.

We started the day off by heading into town and to the beach. We stopped to play in a local playground. From there we did a group hike up a hill (Igueldo) on the east side of the bay. We enjoyed the incredible views of the bay, San Sebastian, the rugged coast toward Portugal, the Pyrenees, and France. There was an amusement park at the top, so we enjoyed some treats and rides before heading down by tram. From there, we broke into groups and hit the town on our own. Students walked the boardwalk, enjoyed the beach and spent most of their time in the exciting Parte Vieja. Given that it was Holy Thursday, all the locals were out and the town was very lively and colorful.

We regrouped in the afternoon and headed over the bridge to the east side of town, where the surf beach is located. We played some games in the sand as a group and then had more free time before dinner. Students shopped and explored. Many of our students had the courage to start up a soccer game with a local group. It was so much fun and an awesome way to integrate with the culture and speak Spanish.

Having been out all day and probably having walked 15+ miles everyone was ready for bed after dinner, so we called it an early night.

Tomorrow we head to Barcelona via Zaragoza.
